B Corp Certified: a different kind of law firm
Cognitive Law is proud to be B Corp Certified.
For us, this means more than achieving a certification. It reflects our belief that a law firm can be commercially successful while also caring about its people, clients, communities and wider impact.
We are a different kind of law firm - built around flexibility, purpose, high-quality legal advice and positive impact.
Cognitive Law was founded to offer lawyers a more flexible and autonomous way to practise law, while still providing clients with the reassurance of working with a regulated, experienced and supportive legal team. Over the years, that model has grown into something bigger than a different way of working. It has become a way of doing business that puts people, purpose and community at the centre of how we operate.
B Corp Certification recognises the work we have done, and continue to do, to build a responsible, values-led law firm. It also gives us a framework to keep improving.
What B Corp means
B Corp Certification is awarded to businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. The assessment looks at the whole business, including governance, workers, customers, community and the environment.
For Cognitive Law, the process has helped us strengthen the way we operate and formalise commitments that have long been part of our culture.
It has encouraged us to look carefully at how we make decisions, how we support our people, how we care for our clients, how we contribute to our local communities and how we can reduce our impact on the environment.
These are not just policies that sit in a folder. They help guide how we make decisions and how we continue to build Cognitive Law as a responsible business.
Why it matters to clients
When you choose Cognitive Law, you are choosing a law firm that takes its responsibilities seriously.
We support clients through important and often stressful legal matters. Whether someone needs advice following a relationship breakdown, help with a property, a dispute, support with a business matter, or guidance when planning for the future, we know that legal advice is rarely just about the paperwork.
Our approach is clear, personal and client-centred. We focus on resolving issues as swiftly and sensitively as possible, while keeping our clients informed and supported throughout.
As part of our B Corp values, we are committed to delivering legal advice in a way that is transparent, ethical and genuinely helpful. We monitor client satisfaction, send questionnaires to new and existing clients, review feedback and use it to improve the way we work.
For us, client care means more than providing legal advice. It means helping clients feel listened to, reassured and confident that their matter is in safe hands.
Why it matters to consultant lawyers
Cognitive Law was created to offer lawyers a different way to practise.
Our consultancy model gives experienced lawyers the freedom to manage their own time, clients and workload, while being supported by a regulated firm with strong systems, governance and community.
This matters because we believe lawyers should be able to build successful careers without being forced into one fixed way of working. Many of our consultants work remotely in the geographical areas where they live, building trusted relationships with clients, suppliers, referrers and local organisations in their own communities.
That flexibility does not just benefit the lawyers who work with us. It benefits clients, who receive personal advice from experienced legal experts. It also benefits local communities, because our consultants are encouraged to support local causes, use local suppliers and contribute to the places where they live and work.
Our B Corp Certification reflects the kind of consultancy model we believe in: one built on autonomy, trust, responsibility and support.
We offer consultants the freedom to work for themselves, without being by themselves.
Take the consultancy journey with us
Our community commitment
Community is central to the way we work.
Cognitive Law’s head office is based in Brighton, East Sussex, and we define our local community as East Sussex. However, as a consultancy law firm, our community reach extends further through our consultant lawyers, who are based in different geographical areas across the South of England and beyond.
Each consultant is embedded in their own local professional network, working with clients, suppliers, referrers and community organisations in the areas they serve.
We have made a formal commitment to purchase core products and services from independent local suppliers wherever possible, with a target of at least 50% of our non-labour expenses being spent with suppliers local to where the firm and our consultants operate.
This means we actively look to work with local businesses, local venues, local print suppliers, local technology providers and local professional service providers where we can.
We also support local businesses through the First Friday Lunch Club, a successful not-for-profit monthly networking event in Brighton and Hove. The event brings together professionals from different sectors, supports local restaurants and gives local charities a platform to speak to the business community about the work they do.
We are extremely proud to support charities close to our hearts, including Focus Foundation, St Barnabas House, The Starr Trust, and George’s Rockstars.
Our support includes monthly donations, volunteering, fundraising, speaking opportunities and consultant-led charity initiatives.
For us, community support is not a one-off activity. It is part of how we do business.
Our people
A responsible business starts with the people within it.
Cognitive Law is a female-led firm, led by Managing Director Lucy Tarrant, and we are proud to have more female consultants than male consultants. We are committed to creating a workplace that values different backgrounds, perspectives and experiences.
Our diversity and inclusion statement reflects our belief that no member of our team is the same as another, and that this is one of our greatest strengths.
We are also committed to fair pay. All employees are paid at least the equivalent of the living wage, and we are part of the Brighton Living Wage campaign, which promotes fair pay across the city.
We support flexible working in practice, not just in principle. Our team benefits from flexibility in working location and hours, including part-time work, flex-time, remote working and job-sharing where possible.
We also invest in training and development. New employees and consultants receive a formal induction, with training on our systems, policies and procedures. We support ongoing training, including role-specific development, cross-skills training, first aid, mental health training, AI training, legal sector events and professional development opportunities.
We want Cognitive Law to be a place where people feel trusted, supported and able to build a working life that suits them.
Our governance and ethics
Good intentions need strong governance behind them.
As part of our B Corp journey, we have worked to ensure that social and environmental performance is not treated as a separate project, but as part of how the firm is run.
Transparency is important to us too. Information about the company’s ownership, financial performance and board membership is publicly available through Companies House, and financial updates are shared internally with staff and consultants.
For us, responsible governance means being clear about who we are, how decisions are made and how we hold ourselves accountable.
A different kind of law firm
B Corp Certification is not the end of the journey. It is a commitment to keep improving, keep learning and keep holding ourselves accountable.
For Cognitive Law, it reflects what we have always believed: that a law firm can be commercially successful while doing business in a responsible, thoughtful and people-focused way.
We are proud to be building a different kind of law firm - one where purpose and profit can work together, where experienced lawyers can work with flexibility and autonomy, where clients receive clear and personal advice, and where the business contributes positively to the communities it is part of.
