We are very pleased that we were able to help the Japan Association in the UK (www.japanassociation.org.uk) run a very successful Zoom seminar on “Cross-border Succession: Assets and Beneficiaries in Japan and in the UK”.

The seminar proved to be very popular amongst the Japanese and those who are related to Japan, and Cognitive will be holding more seminars with the Japan Association in near future.

The main topics we covered at this seminar were as follows:-

  • Conflict of Laws & at Common Law
  • Grant and Assets in English Law
  • Immovables and jurisdiction
  • Concept of Domicile
  • No will or insufficient will
  • Inheritance Tax (IHT)
  • Best Practice

Other speakers included Mr Naoki Kanehisa, a partner of a Japanese law firm Messrs Atsumi & Sakai, who addressed the cross-border succession issues from the Japanese legal points of view.

We are grateful for the organisers of the Japan Association in the UK for their kind invitation and for their attentive cooperation for the seminar.  Their seminar notes (in Japanese language only) are available from here.

We would be very happy to assist you in preparing your will(s), your life planning, and/or dealing with the estate of your loved ones in the UK.

Please feel free to contact Richard Bates.  If you need assistance in Japanese, please let Mayumi Hawkes know.
