Now that Brexit has removed automatic freedom of movement, obtaining a non-lucrative visa is a potential solution for retired and financially self-sufficient UK citizens who wish to spend time in Spain.

Here’s what you need to know about applying for Spanish residence through Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa and Residency Permit.

What is a Non-Lucrative Visa?

A Non-lucrative Visa is a visa to reside in Spain without carrying out any gainful (work or professional) activity, provided that the applicant has sufficient and guaranteed means to live on. This visa does not constitute a work permit.

The non-lucrative visa permits the stay of non-EU individuals in Spain for a maximum of one year, with the chance to extend this further.

Through this visa, you can acquire permanent residency in Spain and enjoy various benefits and services, including healthcare and education.

Who can apply for a Non-Lucrative Visa?

Spanish Non-Lucrative Visas are ideal for retirees as they generally meet the requirements to obtain one, which is why this type of visa is often referred to as the retirement visa.

The requirements to obtain a non-lucrative visa are as follows:

  • The applicant is a non-EU citizen.
  • The applicant wants to live in Spain long term.
  • The applicant is financial stable enough to live without working.
  • The applicant does not want to work in Spain.
  • The applicant has health insurance.
  • The applicant does not have a criminal record.
  • The applicant regularly stays in Spain.

Other family members may also obtain the visa, including:

  • The spouse or unmarried partner.
  • Dependent children and dependent relatives in the ascending line who form part of the family unit.

On the financial aspect, it is a requirement for the applicant to show evidence of sufficient funds.
